Bezahltag 7 Nachexen to Konistag 8 Nachexen
The watch arrived and, once being shown the note delivered by Lord Fredericks, decided that the heroes were not murderers but instead fortunate (to be alive) victims. The watch were unable to provide any further detail on the attackers, so the heroes returned to the Blessings of Taal to recover. (Gard paid for more than a week’s lodging to the pleasure of the Innkeeper.)
The next morning was taken up with a visit to the Temple of Shallya. Andred, Detlef and Kadfina all benefited from the care of Shallya, and Andred asked the priestess if she could do anything to remove his ‘Sticky Stench’. Recognising that Andred was insane, she suggested that he undertake a pilgrimage to the High Temple at Couronne, where he might be able to gain more assistance. She then distracted Andred while she spoke to the others, recommending that he be committed to an Asylum a few hours out of Altdorf.
Once partially healed, the heroes returned to the Blessings of Taal, where they found a message from Lord Messner suggesting they meet that afternoon, and a message from Lady Baern, informing them she would have a brief moment to meet with them at her estate the following morning.
The heroes met up with Lord Messner at the Green Grapes and told him they had found someone who could destroy the artefact, a Jade Wizard named Guillame Deschampe. Lord Messner advised that he would talk to Guilliame, to ensure the ritual was effective. He also advised that the College of Light did hold the Dagger of Yul K’Chaum, and that he would be happy to hand it over to them for destruction, except for one problem. A Dwarven Witch Hunter, by the name of Gottri Hammerfist, had made accusations that Lord Messner was conspiring with Chaos. While Gottri continued to make these accusations, and have him followed by other witch hunters, he was not going to risk being caught with an obvious chaos artefact on his person. He urged the heroes to convince Gottri that he was wrong. He further advised that Gottri appeared to have support from Lord Fredericks, Lady Baern and Klara Robans.
The heroes then went to Empire House to see if Lord Frederick was there, which he wasn’t. So instead they went to the Grand Temple to see if either Father Durnhelm, Father Ranulf or Mother Robans were available. Father Ranulf was pleased to see them, and they had a brief afternoon meal, while they discussed the events of Middenheim. Father Ranulf told him what little he knew of Klara, and promised he would let them know if he found out more.
The heroes then swung by the Broken Barrels, but the Norseman and Dwarf were not there. They instead went to the Cock Pit, where they were able to track down Solveig Thudrun. Gard attempted to gain her confidence by pretending to want to hire her for further work, but when she realised that the heroes were actually the victims of her last job, she attempted to run. Kadfina stopped her, and when Solveig realised they just wanted answers, rather than revenge, she was happy to provide answers for as long as the heroes were willing to pay.
She told them that she had been hired by an average sized, fat man with a short greying beard to ransack their rooms and bring back any jewellery, or anything that looked strange. She was to keep any coin she found. She further clarified, once appropriate financial incentive had been provided, that her hirer, Dieter, was after things with skulls, or strange runes on them, and that she thought that he probably wasn’t fat, just wearing lots of layers of clothes.
She took them to a burnt out district where she met with Dieter after the job. The buildings still smouldering and warm to the touch. Detlef found some orange and red threads on a broken beam, and Andred found tracks in the ash on the ground. Although it was dark in this unlit area of the city, Andred followed the tracks through the district until, in the middle of the street, they disappeared.
