Backertag 6 Nachexen
The heroes awoke to a terrible thunderstorm and hail lashing the streets of Altdorf. They decided to track down the dwarf and Norscan who had started the brawl in the inn. Detlef talked business with a local butcher, whose delivery boy had seen the two brawlers head into a tavern a few districts over. The tavern’s name was ‘The Broken Barrel’.
Heading to the tavern, the heroes spotted a young girl running from the Altdorf watch. Although they did not see what happened, it appears the girl jumped off the side of a bridge into the semi-frozen waters of the Reik River. Andred attempted to find a street that would take him to the water, but instead got lost, and it took him a few minutes to make his way back to the others.
At the Broken Barrel, the heroes spotted the two brawlers right away. They were at the bar drinking, despite the early hour. Kadfina walked up to the bar to order a drink, and the dwarf, having spotted her, attempted to win her with his charm and wit. Despite the terrible efforts of the dwarf, named Nargond, Kadfina was able to resist his charms and suggestions, and he proudly told her how he and his friend Siegfried, were paid for odd jobs, including their most recent job to start a brawl in the taproom of the ‘Blessing of Taal.’ Using her wiles, Kadfina was able to discover that Solveig Thudrun, a mercenary thief, had hired them to create a distraction while she pilfered their rooms. Nargond also told her that they met with her at the ‘Cock Pit’ – a cock-fighting establishment nearby.
Eager to escape the glances and drool, Kadfina and the heroes left, unfortunately without a clear description of Solveig Thudrun. A mistake that was going to end up wasting a lot of their time.
They went to the Cock Pit but found it closed. Unsure of what to do next, they decided to go and see the Doctor looking after Berthold. Avoiding the tolls of the major bridges, they took a roundabout approach to the centre of the city. Having found the Doctor’s clinic, they went inside and found Berthold lying in bed, with his leg splinted. The Doctor attempted to overcharge the heroes, but was bargained down to a less unreasonable price. Andred also inquired if the Doctor had any medicine to overcome the ‘Sticky Stench’. The Doctor did and sold him some pills to take aurally.
With Berthold unable to move, he described the woman who had paid him to deliver the message. She was shorter than Andred and solidly built, with scars over her arms, hands and legs, but not her face. She seemed to be middle-aged, with short brown hair.
The heroes determined to go back to the Cock Pit, with the weather now clearing. Some of the heroes were wondering whether Solveig and the woman who hired Berthold were the same person.
As they were taking their circuitous route (to avoid taxes) back to the Cock Pit, they saw what appeared to be a Gold Wizard (Lore of Metal) in a carriage moving through the city. Curiously, a golden mask covered his face. Andred mused that perhaps the woman who paid Berthold was a ‘Metal Wizard’, however they decided not to follow this particular wizard.
Later in the day, Andred spotted a hunched over man leap through a sewer hole. He thought he saw a long rat-tail poking out of the man’s cloak, but laughed it off, remembering the children’s stories he had heard as a child of Mandred Ratslayer, hero of Middenheim. Kadfina attempted briefly to convince the heroes that tales of the Skaven, horrific rat men who lived under the earth, were true, but was laughed down by the others, amused by the naïve dwarf.
The Cock Pit was still closed. After waiting for a few hours, it opened, and a while after that Andred and Kadfina entered, hoping to provoke a reaction from any women in the establishment, causing them to flee into the arms of Gard and Detlef.
The remainder of the day was spent looking for any sight or sound of Solveig Thudrun. However having no description of the thief, they had little success. More success was had with gambling, where both Kadfina and Andred secured some winnings, by betting on the cocks. Andred’s ‘yellowest beak’ theory proving particularly rewarding.
Late, late in the evening, after much fruitless searching, one bookmaker, frustrated at being asked by each of the heroes throughout the evening whether Solveig was there, said in frustration “Look. She’s not here OK!”
Gard knew he was on to something here.
